Points of clarification
‘Informal’ is ambiguous.
Accept that conceiving of the ‘informal’ and the ‘formal’ as mutually exclusive opposites is a limited conception of what the ‘informal’ is and can be. Take crime as example. It is clearly informal in relation to the formal law, yet can (and is) clearly organised, planned, and involves particular ‘formalised’ processes, rituals and protocols. If you disagree with me I will have my friends come and break your legs! (just joking!) There is sliding ambiguity and potential paradox and contradiction around informality.
Practice what you investigate.
At it’s least, we ask that your project demonstrate that it (and therefore you) engage in practicing an informal urban practice. Your method is to be by doing. This does not mean that every aspect of your project need be concerned with ‘only’ doing an informal urban practice. It means that informal urban practice must be the major element that brings your project into a conceptual and practical whole as a project with integrity that is manifested primarily in the public domain. Other elements of your project must be for the purpose of enabling informal urban practice.
Make opportunities for informality.
Work with the contradiction of organising informality. Keep a check on how much you need to ‘design’, and how much you can ‘let happen’. To accept the informal is to keep open to change and open to negotiate and take new positions. Working informally is to work tactically with opportunities and chance. Seize the opportunity that exists here now.
Make forms for informality: resist formalising form.
Beware of formality gaining rule. Too much talk too much planning too much agreeing too many systems too much seeking consensus too much too much! How can you organise a form for your project where that very form can informally take on qualities that are practiced with it? How can your project give form to the practice that makes informality possible? Structure and form can be informal. Informality often makes its own possibility in relation to formality. Take the genre of improvisation in jazz music as example. A formal logic of composed structure allows the space and time for improvisation to take place.
Enable informal urban practices.
Your project may be about IUP, invent new IUP, amplify existing IUP, revive past and forgotten IUP, invoke radical IUP that envision a type of future (maybe utopian? maybe distopian?) No matter what your project, it should work toward enabling informal urban practices. The evidence of this enabling quality is to be your having practiced in the public urban domain.
